I have been at the school since year 1 and ever since I got to year six I realised the pain all those students before me had to go through.
at hale school you are required to wear long pants in winter as a part of the school uniform, and to all those parents out there please be warned that these pants are not the usual type of pants. at schools like Christchurch they have pants like hale but, the they get a choice between woollen and synthetic. I tell you the only option at hale is woollen pants! I am aware of about 20 children at this school who suffer an allergic reaction from these pants. I remember on my first day of term two year 6 I came home and got undressed, I saw huge red stripes and purple brown dots on my legs and shins this was because of the pants. I will not back down from this point of view because these pants are appalling!
the pants at hale are the definition of hell and itch so much that I cannot even describe them.
the hale pants are so itchy it is impossible to focus on your work and study at the school.
after a year in grade 6 I wore pants shorts underneath my pants and got synthetic pants online, I even had them lined with silk!
hale school don't care about the students point of view because this problem has been occurring since hale started. I will do everything in my power to stop this uniform and bring back the shorts we wore in year 1 to year 5! I truly speak for the whole school but hales winter uniform is the most painful experience in the universe.
I hope this message reaches you headmaster, but if you don't even try to fix this I will leave to Churchland's where students from year 7 to year 12 wear soft sport uniforms all year, there is no formal uniform.
that message comes from my heart
p.s I love the summer shorts and they are absolutely fine the education is great as well.

I’m a current Year 11 student at Hale and I personally was finding Hale a really great school in comparison to previous school but now it doesn’t seem as great for a variety of reasons, such as lack of interaction with girls, excessive focus on academics, lack of student wellbeing, less individualised focus in senior years, etc

I worked for 4 years at Hale a number of years ago (i'd rather stay anonymous). During my time teaching there I encounted many different kinds of teachers some of which were very kind and down to earth people but the majority were extremely stuck up and arrogant. Through out my time working there many teachers would favour students resulting in clear differentation in marks. Many teachers were also extremely lazy when faced with the problem of bullying most would turn a blind eye and ignore it which was concerning to say the least. The school has a corrupt nature and seems to only care about bringing in as much money each year as possible and spending as minimal as they can. All in all if your student isn't an A grade person either athletically or academically they will not enjoy their schooling experience what so ever.

although i am only a year 7 i still find this school appalling in many aspects. i personally have been victim to many circumstances of bullying and arrogance from students and teachers . teachers defending the school and there high desired pay checks at any costs never accepting defeat . and this is only the peoples attitudes i cant change

dunno why everyone is having a bad time, though tbh only the complainers are commenting here. Although Hale does have some things that are annoying (i.e. compulsory camps, long socks in summer (pretty sure this changed for the better), church (cause its Anglican), etc.). The school fees are pretty spicy as well.
About all this arrogant teachers and such, personally I've experienced them being strict to the rules and while they may seem somewhat rude by following it, I'd call those ones grumpy rocks at most. So while I'm not really trying to offend these parents here, I'm just saying that unless you're pretty narcissistic or perhaps appeared arrogant yourself, there's not much reason to start spitting your jargon here, reasonably I'm a child, but in my view you all seem not much different acting like spoiled brats around here, its not like post-high-school will be a happier place as it'll most likely be better or worse depending on your situation.

As a parent I have been very disappointed with this school. My son is in year 10, and as mentioned below in other reviews it's too late to change now. Also as stated below the school is all about image and brand. This year there have been approx 12 boys expelled due to drug use (ICE). Six boys early in the year became high at school and involved in a huge fight. Later this year boys were caught dealing from spare lockers within the school. Younger boys 13 and 14 were exposed to this as they say boys dealing from lockers. It is well know that there is a green locker and a white locker within the school for obtaining various drugs. What is disappointing is the way the school handled the drug dealing and usage. Drugs are everyone but the way issues and handled are important. Yes the boys were expelled by the issue was swept under the carpet. Several parents contacted the Headmaster(Stewart Meade)as the young 13 year old sons were exposed to drug dealing and he refused to acknowledge this occurred. In addition to drugs bullying is at it's all time high at the school. We a boy with type 1 diabetes who is 11 and bullied severely for his condition. The parents have been into the school demanding more be done as the school is too soft. We know another boy who is bullied for saying the money that could buy an expensive car would feed lots of starving children. Again nothing done about this. The food at the school canteen is rubbish (Dim Sims etc) in the junior years and equally as bad (the year 7 PCL told our class at parent evening not to eat there as it's too unhealthy). Again many parents have notified Stuart who has done noting about it. The boarding food is also rubbish (Packet mashed potato)

I agree with all the negative reports on the school. It is a corporation lead by uninspiring leaders. Just listen to the js principal talking at any speech morning is a joke. Even the staff are cringing and laughing. Bullying exists through ts the school in high levels. I agree any hint of negative feedback is met with a wall and it impacts on your child. Favourism abounds and the bigger your name the better outcome for your child, and the school us stuck in the past. It's policy that boys must wear long socks in the middle of summer because it's tradition where no other school does this is a prime example. The boys comfort doesn't matter. There is no sense of community and the Headmaster keeps to himself like the reviews state on rate my teacher. He will often walk around sports practice not even engaging with parents or boys. My son is in year 10 and the principle nor the headmaster hasn't ever introduced himself to him. Don't waste your money on this school like others have said there are much better option for these modern times.

Im the big muscly Neugebauer from Haley... this school is good, but the hunty cunty (st.G head of house) is a total 8====3. School should fire him and he should have his head inside his asshole.

I can only rate this school based on my own experience. My son finished at the school being what you might call, an average student. He made some good friends there, found some of the teachers to be good but others to be complete buffoons. The Hale organisation has a set way of doing things and any deviation from that is frowned upon. I had limited dealings with the teaching staff but from what contact I had, I found those to be aloof, arrogant and on some occasions condescending. My son was a whole lot happier and relaxed after finishing there and has grown in confidence. I have been trying to think of positives which are few and far between but I would add that my son's experience may well be different to other boys who have attended there. As for communication then forget it! You only get personal communication if it is of a negative nature. Try the school by all means but to me it seemed more of a corporation than an educational establishment.

No better nor no worse than most other comparable schools. If you can afford it give it a go. Otherwise, plenty of good government and less expensive private school who will provide just as good an education for your boys.

Uninspiring teachers led by uninspiring management. The teachers seem incapable of mentoring or inspiring the boys at any level. The name of the game is extracting as much money from the fee paying parents with the minimum effort. No accountability and as such, no effort to make forward thinking changes of under performing staff or management. It will never change at this school so my advice is don't bother.

Had mixed experiences with Hale. There are some dedicated teaching staff who have the boys best interests at heart but I think they are in the minority. I would liked to have seen more sincerity from the Management and Senior staff rather than just repeating their standard rhetoric when issues present themselves. Nepotism and favouritism is apparent to all except to those who benefit directly from it. The school is an anachronism which needs to be brought into the 21st century. This however, will never happen because 'tradition' is far more important than continueous improvement. Just remember the old saying, 'Buyer Beware'.

These reviews are spot on. I know of at least four letters that were written to the Headmaster outlining concerns, which were either not acted on or replied too. Quality of service is not applicable to this organisation I guess!!!

THIS IS MY EXPERIENCE OF HALE SCHOOL.
Hale has some of the highest paid and most arrogant teachers I have ever come across. In their eyes, they are ALWAYS right and everybody else is ALWAYS wrong.
Their condescending tone and dismissive nature soon becomes apparent when you start to have dealings with them. Email is their preferred choice of communication but face to face discussions seems to be avoided at all costs.
If they get something wrong you will never get an apology but will be met with a wall of silence or empty rhetoric. They closes ranks at the slightest hint of any form of negative feedback about the school.
I too tried the private schooling route in the belief the very high cost would be worth it and provide my son with a head start but found out when it was to late that this did not prove to be the case. For the most part, I have had considerably more negative than positive experiences.
There will no doubt be parents who agree and disagree with my commentary but I would finish by warning that issues do not become overtly apparent until students start in years 10 and 11. By that time you are committed to remaining at the school.

The previous posts are spot on with their observations. For instance, the less academic Students are 'encouraged' to do 1AB/1CD or 2AB/2CD courses as these will not be counted in the Year 12 WACE results. The Teachers expect their Students to know the course syllabus as opposed to teaching them! Do more homework, get a private tutor, etc are some of their responses when a boy is struggling in a particular subject. It is never the fact that the teacher might be incompetent or lazy. There are plenty of those!
Favouritism abounds in all aspects of school life whether it is sports selection, prefects, captains, etc. If your face fits then all well and good. If it doesn't then regardless of your abilities you will never be considered for anything.
The school is big on talk and does not like criticism of any kind. The previous poster summed it up by saying "All that glitters is not gold". Never have truer words been spoken.
Make your choice carefully. If I had my time again I would not send my son to Hale. There are plenty of better alternatives in both the Private and State system.

In reference to my previous review dated 21 JAN 2014 my rating should have read POOR. My apologies.

I read the previous review with interest. I had a son at Hale school but decided to remove him and put him into a local state school where he has flourished, grown in confidence and is an environment where all students are treated equally unlike Hale where the 'Schoolmasters Favourites' soon become apparent.
I tried the private route in the belief the cost would be worth it and would provide my son with a better all rounded education but despite the cost, for the most part I have been disappointed with the school. Hale will quickly show their true colours and are after your money first and foremost, and if your kid can't keep up then they will not do much to help.
By all means pay the money, try the school and soon you will realise that all that glitters is not always gold!

Hale school is all about image. The staff are arrogant, self serving and incapable of communicating in person with parents. Whenever negative feedback is given or their decisions questioned you are sidelined and will not receive a response. They close ranks very quickly if you question them. The empty rhetoric is all about keeping their brand image and not acting in the best interest of the boys. Numerous boys and their parents finish schooling at Hale with a sense of dissapointment and failure. There are many, many parents who regret sending their son's there. My advice to anybody considering sending their son there would be to think hard and fast before doing so. Do not believe all the hype and spin because your son will not get a rounded education there.
